The AFFAN
Mencía 2021

First wine of the Mencía variety made in Chile.
Ancestral variety of the designations of origin Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra (Spain).
Vineyards planted on trellises in 2010 and located at 75o m.a.s.l. with a marked influence of the altitude, its cold winds from the Andean mountain range and its wide thermal oscillation.
Spring 2020 was cool and dry in comparison to the previous season, then
the summer presented moderate temperatures with an unusual rainfall event in January which did not affect the good condition of the grapes and their slow ripening.
The grapes were harvested and selected by hand in the vineyard on 27 February in 12 kg boxes.
In the winery, the bunches were selected and placed in open wooden vats to be extracted by hand.
The wort fermented spontaneously for 16 days without the use of commercial yeast or
nutrients in order to preserve the natural character of the vineyard.
Finally, the wine was aged for 14 months in French oak casks of 5
years of use.
Bottled unfiltered in August 2019.
