CARMÉNÈRE_2018
Luz is the end result of our project: to produce a world-class Carménère in the Almahue Valley. Together with our family, we set out to create an exclusive wine of unbeatable quality in honour of our grandmother Luz Pereira, an extraordinary woman who planted the vineyards in 1945.
This singular mission determines every harvest, for us and for future generations.
THE HARVEST
The 2018 vintage presented ideal conditions throughout the season: wet winter, moderate spring temperatures, warm December, moderately cool January and warmer temperatures towards the end of the season allowed for balanced vine growth and a smooth and prolonged ripening of the berries.
THE VINEYARD
This is the new wine from Clos de Luz and as specialists in Carménère, we have decided to select sectors of less than 0.5 hectares from our vineyards planted in 1945. All the vines are planted from the mass selections of old vines planted in the area and these are grown on their own roots (free-standing). Through soil studies and based on our own experience vinifying our grapes, we selected four sectors with the highest quality potential: three of Carménère and one of Cabernet Sauvignon.
ELABORATION
Harvesting is done by hand and in boxes of 10 kilos. The grapes are received at our winery, the bunches are selected before being destemmed, and after destemming, a new selection of berries is made. The grapes enter the fermentation tanks by gravity. In the case of Luz grapes, all of them ferment in concrete vats and/or French oak vats.
Like all Clos de Luz wines, the fermentation process is done with native yeasts.
Fermentation is prolonged for 12 to 15 days, taking care to maintain temperatures between 26 and 29 oC. At the end of fermentation, the wine is kept in contact with the skins for a period of time to be defined by daily tastings.
STORAGE AND ASSEMBLY
The base of this 2018 vintage wine is the Carménère planted in 1945 from the barracks 4 bajo, this aged 12 months in a new 4,000 litre un-toasted Gamba foudre. The remaining 8% comes from a Cabernet planted in 1956 from the barracks "La Alfalfa", this wine also aged in a new 500 litre Sylvain oak barrel.
Once the final blend was determined, we let the components integrate for 6 months and tasted the wine again. Then come the "finishing touches", this year we added a barrel of Carménère from the heart of the #9 block which stood out from the 300 barrels of Carménère from 2018 that we tasted.
This wine was bottled unstabilised, unfiltered and without the addition of any chemicals (except for a low dose of sulphur prior to bottling).
