WINE
From the first vintage for the MMAD team, it was hard to imagine a better season. Lovely gentle conditions during ripening gave us a Garnacha with an intense core of red and blue fruits. There is purity and density, but also a lightness that belies the energy and power of the fruit. Notes of raspberry coulis and pomegranate mingle with fennel seeds and cumin; the flavours unfold as the wine rests in the glass. The grapes, mostly destemmed, fermented as whole berries in concrete and stainless steel, then aged in used 500-litre barrels.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C
Ageing Potential: It has the concentration and structure to develop fine tertiary characters in bottle for the next 15 years.
Alcoholic strength: 14.0%
THE VINEYARD
Located in select Blewitt Springs, the MMAD Vineyard was first planted in 1939, with the oldest blocks of Shiraz dating back to 1941. The vineyard features the fine Maslin sands typical of Blewitt Springs and is exposed to cool south-westerly sea breezes. Beneath the sand, there is a layer of ironstone pebbles, and this combination of sand, ironstone and cool winds gives both perfume and structure to the wines.
THE STORY
The old Blewitt Springs vines are a precious resource and an important part of Australia's wine history. In early 2021, the MMAD Vineyard was acquired by a quartet comprising winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and Master Winemakers Michael Hill Smith and David LeMire. MMAD takes its name from their initials. MMAD wines seek to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the rare old vines that thrive there.
