Appellation of Origin: Yarra Valley
Varietals: 100% Chardonnay
Clones: Gingin
Harvest: 26 February 2019
Bottling: 25 November 2019
Ageing: 2020-2026
SEASON:
A cool start was marked by solid rains in December, resulting in lush, healthy green vines. The final stage was warm, accelerating ripening, but the natural acids in the Chardonnay blocks were surprisingly high. The fruit was handpicked in the vineyard and winery. The 2019 is an exceptional vintage of Chardonnay.
VINIFICATION:
100% harvested by hand. Pressed from whole bunches, indigenous fermentation in 500L French barrels. No batonnage or malolactic fermentation. Matured for 10 months in new and used French oak - 20% new, 80% old, from Taransaud and D&J cooperages.
VINEYARD:
- Location: Gruyere
- Planted: 1997
- Elevation: 130 - 210 metres
- Soil Type: Clay loam on granite / ironstone.
- Orientation: North-facing slopes
- Size: 30 hectares
Located on the steep north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges, the Sexton Vineyard is exposed and demanding. The thin soil and roots in stony loams on a rocky clay base give low yields, resulting in intensely flavoursome fruit with high skin to juice ratio.
