ORIGIN

Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning "Eye of Dawn") which sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in World War II and was sunk off the coast of Algeria in 1942.

VINEYARDS

Grapes for Awatea '18 were hand-picked from Te Mata Estate vineyards between 25 March and 20 April 2018.

ELABORATION

Separate parcels of grapes were destemmed prior to a traditional fermentation with warm soaking and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then transferred to new and used French oak barrels to age for 16 months. Throughout this time, the barrels were regularly racked and filled. The separated wines were blended in January 2019, then returned to the barrels for their second winter. The finished wine was clarified with egg whites and bottled in October 2019. The final blend is 48% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 15% cabernet franc.
