Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz 2021
Title: McLaren Vale
Variety: 100% Shiraz
Terroir: Sandy and ferruginous soils
Sub-region: Blewitt Springs
Alcoholic strength: 14% vol
Ageing: French oak barrels for 18 months
History:
In 2012, Andre and Selina Bondar fell in love with a plot of Syrah: the Rayner vineyard, planted between 1947 and 1950. We are in McLaren Vale, an appellation in southern Australia, near Adelaide, by the ocean. There are still old vines and this love of the parcel created its first vintage, Violet Hour. Andre, familiar with the variety from working with Alain Graillot, represents the new Australian wave: fresh, flavoursome, digestible; something different and very Australian.
Description:
A Shiraz from the oldest blocks of his Rayner vineyard, planted in 1947 and 1950. Block 47 is grown on deep sandy soils with ferruginous rocks, offering wonderful perfume and elegant structure. Block 50 has shallow clay soils over limestone rock, resulting in a fleshier style and chalky texture. Vinification includes a 20% on whole bunches, which provides a very fine-grained texture on the palate. The wine is aromatic with ripe fruit, showing a balanced solar character thanks to careful winemaking.
Service: 15 - 17°C
