BULL PADDOCK VINEYARD SAUVIGNON BLANC - 2022

THE VINEYARD
Our Bull Paddock vineyard is located in the Dillons Point sub-region of the lower Wairau Valley in Marlborough. The land was originally used for bull farming before the Neylon family realised the potential of the site and planted Sauvignon Blanc. The young, free draining, alluvial soils now produce grapes with lifted aromas and ripe flavours. We believe this sub-region grows the best Sauvignon Blanc in all of Marlborough.

WINEMAKING
The 2022 growing season began with significant rainfall, marking the end of three years of drought in Marlborough. A warm spell in early December produced a welcome and better than average fruit set. In late February, we had a couple of significant rains that replenished soil moisture levels that had been reduced during the summer. For the next two weeks we had cool days and nights, which kept acidities high. The harvest coincided with the peak of the Omicron outbreak in New Zealand, which put some pressure on the staff. Thanks to excellent teamwork, we were able to harvest our fruit at the right time, retaining vibrant acidity and concentrated fruit flavour.

The Bull Paddock vineyard is only minutes from our winery, which minimises skin contact prior to pressing, allowing us to capture the full expressive flavour and aroma of the fruit, without the bitter phenolics. After harvest, the grapes were gently pressed before individual lots were fermented in stainless steel, using a selection of yeast strains chosen to enhance the aromas.

Each bottle of Rapaura Springs tells the story of a lifetime: of water and wine, and of generations of families working with nature. Our label represents the rocky aquifer in our main vineyard and the pristine springs that connect it to our land. We make exceptional wines that reflect our remarkable landscapes, pure waterways and passionate people.
